The following was listed in the August, 1939 Collinsville Herald:

A first class mystery was uncovered last week by workmen digging in preparation for completion of a new showroom at J.C.McLanahan Agency.  A tombstone, in excellent condition was uncovered but no graveyeard was ever there….

The article ends with…

And to contradict the evidence that there should be no stone there, McLanahans have the stone, which bears the following inscription:  Carolina H. Daughter of Wm. and Mina Meyners born July 27, 1858 died Mar 2, 1860  Aged

The stone is broken off at this point.  It is about a foot wide and two feet long and about three inches thick.

(Collinsville, 2009) – The location of this tombstone is no longer known.

Lost Cemetery?

There is a mystery brewing in Collinsville.  This year during the Haunted House Tour a rumor began about a possible cemetery under the McLanahan Automotive building.   More than one person attending the tour mentioned hearing this rumor.  How did this come about?  Is there any truth to this?  Did this cemetery belong to the Episcopal Church dedicated in 1840? Contact was made with McLanahan Automotive.  We spoke with Jeff Voss.  Jeff was very much interested in the rumors.  To add fuel to the story, Jeff mentioned that they had found a tombstone.   Another news story was located in an old Collinsville Herald.  The story mentioned that a tombstone was located on the McLanahan lot.  This now verifies 2 tombstones located on this lot!  Stay tuned!  We are currently investigating this story & preparing for the Haunted Tour in 2010.

Big Thank You

Christmas Wagon Rides

Christmas Wagon Rides

The Board of Directors would like to take this time to thank everyone who made the Christmas in Collinsville events so successful.  It was wonderful to have the Holiday House Tour return this year with our new event chair, Tami Springer.  With the help of Home Federal Savings & Loan for their sponsorship, Boy Scouts Adventure Crew at St. John UCC, and 8 home/business owners, almost 200 people enjoyed the tour.

Thank you to everyone who helped with the candle light tree lighting at the Collinsville Township Building – The merchants for displaying the snowman stroll coloring contest – To Miner’s Theatre and C.A.R.D. for helping with Santa – To McLanahan Automotive for sponsoring the Wagon Rides – To the carolers – the Urban Art Co-op for children’s crafts, and everyone who helped in anyway big or small.  It is times like these when the community pulls together that make Collinsville a wonderful place to live.  Thank you!
